Bread Bags

Our Bamboo-bag Bread bags are made in California from 100% retted bamboo fabric designed especially for carrying and storing bread. Bamboo-bags are made for people who want to use fewer paper and plastic bags — people who care about the environment and care about their bread.

The secrets of Bamboo cloth

The manufacture of bamboo fabric in China relies on a secret process as did silk in its early years. However, we do know that bamboo produces a natural bacteriostatic substance called bamboo kun which is retained after the fabric is made. Furthermore, an anti-fungal protein, present in the bamboo shoots, permanently binds to the fabric filaments during processing. The linen-like 100% bamboo cloth used by Bamboo-bag is made by retting, unlike the many rayon-like bamboo fabrics made by chemical processes. Bamboo fabric breathes yet retains moisture – inside a Bamboo-bag is the ideal environment for your bread. While bamboo fabric keeps bread fresher longer than most other storage options, all bread will eventually become stale. We include here some recipes for bread that is still around when you bring home a fresh loaf. Please send us your favorite recipes so that we may share them with other owners of a bamboo-bag.

Three Designs

The Turtle Bag, with its wide mouth and pleated side, can accommodate a round two-pound loaf. The Loaf Pouch holds up to two ordinary one-pound loaves. Either design may be used for Challah bread- the Turtle Bag is best adapted to cover the loaf on the Sabbath table.

The Baguette Quiver can comfortably hold up to three long loaves. The top of the bag closes with a drawstring to keep the bread both safe during transit and fresh, outside the refrigerator, after the bread arrives home. The Quiver is made to be worn with the long front strap diagonally across the chest so that the bearer's arms remain free for riding a bicycle, carrying other groceries, or handling a stroller.

All bags are designed to fold neatly into themselves, making a small packet easily carried in pocket or purse.

Bring your Bamboo-bag to the farmer's market and use it instead of a plastic bag every time you shop.

Cleaning your Bamboo-bag Bread bag

When you feel your Bamboo-bag Bread bag needs cleaning, simply turn it inside-out, shake out any crumbs, and wash it by machine in warm or cold water. You can hang it out in the garden or use a dryer.
